EPIC was commissioned to deliver a new, flexible exhibition for Lady’s Island Community Centre that would showcase the history of the area and the unique habitat of Lady’s Island lake.
A key part of the brief was the need for a movable and storable interpretive solution, which would be housed in the large multipurpose hall of the Community Centre. The design solution required an organic feel that reflected its environment which was also a storable solution.
The narrative arc was ‘Bringing the Outside In’. EPIC developed four main themes through which to tell the stories of Lady’s Island in an engaging way using sound, film and graphic panels.
The exhibition title ‘Lady’s Island: Keepers of Heritage and Habitat’ clearly reflects the content of the exhibition. Using natural materials similar to those found in the local environment, EPIC delivered an exhibition sensitive to its location.
The exhibition structure comprises 18 free-standing plywood panels faced with graphic panels, some of which were over-faced with stencilled bird motifs. At the centre of the room, a large planter filled with reeds evokes the lakeside habitat. Plywood benches married in with the design.

EPIC researched and developed the content for the exhibition in conjunction with local historians. All written content and fact-checking was completed before translation of the content into Irish. Development of the graphic design style and branding then began.
EPIC storyboarded and produced three videos with audio and were responsible for writing the scripts and casting the voice-over artists. EPIC produced an audio soundscape featuring local wildlife including the tern, a species of bird that has colonised the lake, to create an atmospheric sonic backdrop to the exhibition.
We designed and installed exterior signage to advertise the exhibition to passing visitors. Throughout the project, EPIC was responsible for the procurement of the various contractors needed to execute the approved plan.
Notwithstanding the challenges posed by Covid-19 and Brexit, we met the client’s tight delivery schedule within budget.
